WALTHAM, Mass. – Men’s track and field grad student Irie Gourde of Portland, Oregon, has been named the April 25 Brandeis Athlete of the Week, presented by The Chateau Restaurant Group.
Gourde, who was also named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, broke his own school in the 200-meter dash at the MIT Sean Collier Invitational on Saturday. His time of 21.59 seconds won the race by 0.47 seconds and was 0.12 second faster than his previous University record set a year earlier. Gourde is now ranked tops in the UAA and 14th in Division III in the 200. He also won the 100m with a personal best of 10.96 seconds. He is qualified for the Open New England and New England Division III championships with the finishes.
Gourde earned All-America honors in the 200 meters in the indoor season with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships. He was also named the New England Division III Runner of the Year and the UAA Indoor Most Outstanding Performer. He is looking for his third-straight berth at the national championships having qualified for the outdoor championships in 2017 as a senior.
Gourde will be competing at the UAA Championships this weekend at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh
