Kevin Murphy '09, Men's Soccer

Senior Kevin Murphy of Monson, Mass., is a tri-captain on the men's soccer team who has been a mainstay both on defense and in the midfield in his career. Learn more about him with seven questions.

1) What has been the highlight of your athletic career so far?

Without a doubt our upset win at NYU my sophomore year.  NYU was set up to win the UAA and we beat them on their field 1-0 in OT.  That win gave us the momentum we needed to continue on that season to win the ECAC tournament.

2) What makes your team special?

The bond both on the field and off the field is what makes the soccer team so special.  We are all good friends on the field and better friends off it.  I came to Brandeis with two brothers and am able to leave with around fifty.

3) How do your experiences on the field translate to the classroom/world?

The most important translation that can be made from the field to the classroom is time management.  Juggling the time required to be part of a competitive team and the time required to excel in the classroom is a difficult thing.  My experience at Brandeis has greatly improved my time management ability.  Also, the sense of pride that Brandeis athletics carries will have a lasting impression throughout the rest of my life.

4) What is your favorite class and why?

Any class taught by Prof. David Jacobson.  I have taken both Urban Anthropology and Families and Households and would recommend both classes to any Brandeis student.  Prof. Jacobson has a way of making his students feel comfortable in the class environment and is always available to offer his own time for extra help when needed.

5) What is your favorite activity at Brandeis and why?

I'd have to say my favorite activity at Brandeis would be attending the basketball games.  Our basketball program has been very successful for the four years I've been at Brandeis and has managed to spark Brandeis' school spirit.  The basketball games pull people from all over the Brandeis community and the atmosphere is unbelievable. Many of us even travel to the away games that are within reasonable distance.

6) What are your aspirations after Brandeis?

After Brandeis my goal is to attend Law School.  When and where is dependent on my LSAT scores, hopefully somewhere warm.

7) What is something surprising we might not know about you?

In high school I was a better baseball player than soccer player.
