The Brandeis men’s basketball team will look to return to the postseason for the sixth time in seven years in 2012-13 after posting a 13-12 record last season. Three of the five players who started in 10 or more games last season are back, as are six other players who also earned time in the starting lineup. Though coach Brian Meehan’s squad will have to account for the departure of leading scorer Vytas Kriskus and top assist man Tyrone Hughes, three players who averaged double figures in scoring are back, as are three of their top four rebounders. Honorable-mention All-UAA forward Youri Dascy, a junior, tops the returners, averaging 10.7 points (21st in the UAA) and 6.8 rebounds per game (5th in UAA). Classmate Ben Bartoldus also averaged 10.7 ppg while connecting on 41.4 percent from 3-point range, while sharpshooting guard Derek Retos finished at 10.2 ppg and was seventh in Division III in 3-point shooting at 46.4%. As a team, the Judges trailed only conference mates Rochester from beyond the arc at 41.3%. Bartoldus is also the top returning assist man on the team, averaging 1.2 apg last season. Senior Jay Freeman, who averaged a team-high 16.6 minutes per game off the bench, will look to fill in for Hughes at the point after scoring 6.8 ppg and dishing 0.8 apg, as will junior transfer Gabe Moton, who makes the short trip to Waltham from Chestnut Hill where he played at Boston College. Senior Anthony Trapasso (13.7 mpg, 3.3 ppg) will spend time filling Kriskus’s shoes, while juniors  Alex Stoyle (13.6 mpg, 4.3 ppg) and Alex Schmidt (12.8 mpg, 3.0 rpg) will add depth to the front court. Other freshmen expected to make a difference include guards Colby Smith and Ryne Williams and forward Kevin Trotman.

The Brandeis women (6-19 in 2011-12) will look to build momentum off their season-ending win over NYU. The Judges will have to account for the loss of their two leading scorers from a year ago in All-UAA team members Morgan Kendrew (2nd team, 12.0 ppg) and Diana Cincotta (HM, 8.2 ppg). Coach Carol Simon’s squad returns three other starters. Sophomore Hannah Cain tied for second on the team in minutes played last year, starting all 25 games and averaging 26.5 mpg. She is the team’s top returning scorer at 6.8 ppg, and led the squad and finished seventh in the UAA with 3.0 assists per game. Cain also finished second on the team in rebounding at 5.3 boards per game, including 2.3 offensive rebounds per game. Senior Samantha Anderson also started every contest for the Judges and finished 10th in the league in rebounding at 5.8 caroms per game. Rounding out the returning starters is forward Erika Higginbottom, who rounded into shape after missing the middle part of the season due to injury. Higginbottom started the final 11 games for the Judges, finishing with a flourish when she scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds against NYU. Higginbottom also had 11 caroms in a game against Emory.  One other player who earned a start for the Judges, senior co-captain Courtney Ness, will also look to continue to make an impact in the frontcourt after leading the Judges with a 43.2 FG%. Juniors Kasey Dean, a co-captain, and Nicolina Vitale, also saw play off the bench in a majority of games and will be looked upon to step up this season. The Judges also have six freshman on the roster who will look to push the returners for playing time.

Brandeis tips off their season against Mitchell College on Saturday November 17th in the Judges Classic at Red Auerbach Arena. You can follow live stats here and watch live video here.
