Sanford lowered her personal best in the mile run for the third meet in a row at the Tufts Stampede on Saturday, Feb. 1. Her time of 5:03.21 was second overall on the day and ranks her seventh-best in Division III this season. She is ranked second in the UAA in the mile, by less than a second. This is Sanford’s first career UAA Athlete of the Week honor. She was a member of the Judges’ 2013 UAA champion distance-medley relay team. Brandeis will host the 2014 UAA championships on Feb. 28 and March 1.
Mattos and Mandel were Brandeis fencing’s top performers at the team’s home Eric Sollee Invitational on Feb. 1, going a combined 21-1 as the Judges were 9-1 combined. Mattos was 11-0 in women’s foil, while Mandel went 10-1 in men’s sabre. Mattos helped the Brandeis women to a 5-0 mark with wins over Haverford College (17-10), Hunter College (22-5), New Jersey Institute of Technology (22-5), and Stevens Institute of Technology (21-6) before topping UAA rival NYU, 20-7. Mattos was 3-0 against Haverford, NYU and Stevens and had two wins against NJIT. She is 54-11 overall this season and looks to return to the NCAA Championships at Ohio State in March.
Mandel led the men to wins over Haverford (22-5), Hunter (21-6), NJIT (21-6), and Stevens (20-7) before falling 15-12 to UAA rival NYU. Mandel posted a 3-0 mark versus Haverford and Stevens, and 2-1 against NYU. Overall this season, Mandel is 54-6 and will be looking to earn his second career All-America honor after placing 12th in 2013 in men’s sabre.
Sanford is a 2010 graduate of Arlington High School. She is the daughter of Edward and Valerie Hatch, LaGrangeville, N.Y.
Mattos is a 2012 graduate of LaSalle Academy. She is the daughter of David and Diane Mattos, Providence, R.I.
Mandel is a 2011 graduate of The Masters School. He is the son of Eric and Karen Mandel, White Plains, N.Y.
