Baseball runs unbeaten streak to seven before falling in game two at Babson
BABSON PARK, Mass. (taken from a Babson College press release)
-- Regional rivals Babson College and Brandeis University split a
non-conference baseball doubleheader at Govoni Field on Saturday,
as Brandeis (12-6-1) won game one, 6-1, and Babson (10-10) took
game two, 8-7.
Senior captain Tim Dunphy (Cambridge, Mass.) was magnificent on the mound for Brandeis in game one, giving up just one run on three hits, walking one and striking out three in seven innings. The complete game win improved his record to 5-2 on the year. Offensively, the Judges provided the senior southpaw with two runs in the top of the second, as juniors Ben Dashefsky (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Jeff Bourdon (North Adams, Mass.) both scored on a two-out error, and three more in the sixth, when Dashefsky singled in one run and sophomore Malcolm Cone-Coleman (Portland, Maine) drove in two more.
Dashefsky went 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI for Brandeis, while junior Andrew Collins (South Boston, Mass.) singled in senior tri-captain Teddy Dziuba (Wayne, N.J.) for Babson's lone run. Sophomore Jon Igoe (Lexington, Mass.) was the tough-luck loser for the Beavers, allowing two unearned runs in two innings to drop his record to 3-1.
Brandeis once again jumped out in front in game two, scoring two unearned runs on one hit and a pair of Babson errors in the first. The Beavers then took their first lead of the day with a four-run second inning, highlighted by back-to-back RBI singles by juniors Billy Lucas (Atlanta, Ga.) and Matt Chatterton (Fall River, Mass.). That lead would prove to be short-lived, as the Judges came right back with two more in the top of the third on RBI-singles by Dashefsky and Bourdon.
Babson took the lead for good in the bottom of the third, as Lucas drove in his second run of the game with a double to right and Dziuba later knocked in two more with a single to left. The Beavers would add another key run on Lucas' third RBI-hit of the day in the fourth to take an 8-4 lead.
Brandeis cut its deficit in half with two runs in the fifth, chasing Babson first-year starter Pete Bizinkauskas (Duxbury, Mass.) from the game. Bourdon knocked in junior Jonathon Winston (Nanuet, N.Y.) with a sacrifice fly to right and senior Phil Aurigemma (Westborough, Mass.) plated Dashefsky with a single up the middle. Dashefsky then factored into yet another Brandeis run in the sixth, when he singled in sophomore Chuck Sheehan (Lexington, Mass.) to cut Babson's lead to 8-7.
The Judges put the tying run in scoring position in the top of the seventh, as first-year Nick Gallagher (Southboro, Mass.) drew a lead-off walk against sophomore reliever John Hudspeth (Mount Laurel, N.J.) and, after a strikeout, sophomore pinch runner Chris McDonough (Sudbury, Mass.) stole second. Hudspeth then issued a walk to senior Scott Kuhen
(Hamilton, N.J.) to put runners at first and second, but Chatterton snagged a hard-hit grounder off the bat of senior Chris Navis (Walpole, Mass.) at third, stepped on the bag, and threw across the diamond for the game-ending double play.
Sophomore Sam Whelan (Milton, Mass.) picked up the win in relief for Babson, allowing one run in 1 2/3 innings to improve to 1-0. Hudspeth pitched a scoreless seventh for his second save of the season. Sophomore Craig Letendre (New Bedford, Mass.) started and took the loss for Brandeis, dropping his record to 1-2. Dashefsky was 3-for-4 with two more RBIs in game two, while Lucas went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
