WALTHAM, Mass. – Nothing was decided today in a match-up
of cross-town rivals as the Brandeis University and Bentley College
baseball teams played to an 8-8 tie in eight innings on a sloppy
Stein Diamond today.
Brandeis (11-5-1) used the sloppy weather to its advantage in the last inning, scoring four unearned runs after two were out. Sophomore 1B Pat Mathews (Easton, Mass.) started the rally with a single, followed by a walk to junior 2B Shane Butland (Columbus, Ohio). They advanced on a passed ball and scored when the Falcon infield committed two errors on the same play, leaving rookie catcher Nick Gallagher (Southboro, Mass.) on third. Gallagher scored on another Bentley error, and the Judges loaded the bases on a walk and hit batsman. The tying run came home in rookie RF Mike Alfego (Shrewsbury, Mass.) on a passed ball.
Bentley (10-11-1) had led 7-2 after five-and-a-half innings, mostly on the strength of a four-run second. A double-steal of second and third by senior DH G.J. Vincente (Salem, N.H.) and junior 2B Tim Denehy (Norwood, Mass.) set up a two-run single by senior RF Bill Dacier (Medway, Mass.). RBI hits by rookie LF Kevin Vona (Belmont, Mass.) and senior 3B Chad Mastin (Newmarket, N.H.) gave the Falcons a 5-1 lead after one-and-a-half innings.
Brandeis was paced by junior DH Jon Winston (Nanuet, N.Y.), who was 2-3 with an RBI, while Mathews was 2-4 with a run scored and a double, Brandeis's only extra-base hit of the game.
Bentley had a pair of three-hit performances, as Mastin went 3-5 with a pair of RBI and a run scored, while Denehy was 3-5 with a double, two runs scored and a stolen base. Junior 1B Tom Haugh (Andover, Mass.) also added a double for the visitors. Sophomore Chris Dupay (Scotia, N.Y.) went 7.2 innings allowing seven runs (three earned) and nine hits with five strikeouts and seven walks in the no-decision.
