SANFORD, Fla. -- The Brandeis University baseball team sent 18
men to the plate in the fourth inning, scoring 13 runs - all
unearned - today as the Judges defeated Case Western Reserve
University, 13-3, in a University Athletic Association (UAA)
showdown at Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford, Fla.
Brandeis (2-1, 1-1 UAA) pounded out 10 hits and took advantage of four Case errors, a passed ball and a balk in the key inning. Junior DH Jon Winston (Nanuet, N.Y.) had an RBI single in his first plate appearance in the frame and added a two-run-producing ground ball that was ruled an error. The squad got an RBI double from senior LF Chris Navis (Walpole, Mass.) and another two-bagger from junior RF Ben Dashefsky (Massapequa, N.Y.), while Navis, senior catcher Phil Aurigemma (Westborough, Mass.) and sophomore CF Chuck Sheehan (Lexington, Mass.) both had two RBI in the inning.
On the mound, sophomore righty Mike Dax (Delmar, N.Y.) picked up the win with a seven-inning complete-game. The contest was called in the seventh because of the 10-run rule. Making his first collegiate start after 11 relief appearances last season, Dax scattered seven hits while giving up three runs, all earned. He struck out six and walked none. Dax allowed two runs in the third inning but stranded two Spartan runners on base. He also allowed a single run in the fifth inning.
