Figueroa's number to be retired at Oct. 10 Alumni Game
The Brandeis Baseball alumni game is back! On Saturday, Oct. 10th,
amidst a full day of varsity contests, the baseball team will hold
its Alumni Game at 12 p.m.
Following the game at 2:30, the team will host a dinner catered by
Blue Ribbon BBQ, at which time Major League alumnus Nelson Figueroa
'98 will have his #2 formally retired by the team. Nelson, who was
selected in the 30th round of the 1995 Major League Baseball Draft
by the New York Mets, became Brandeis's first major-leaguer when he
debuted in 2000 with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was subsequently
dealt to the Philadelphia Phillies with three other players in a
deal for Curt Schilling. He has also played in the majors for
Milwaukee and Pittsburgh before returning to the Mets organization
in 2008. He has also played internationally in Mexico, Taiwan
(earning the 2007 Taiwan Series MVP) and Venezuela and represented
Puerto Rico in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
So after adding to your own personal Brandeis Baseball highlights
reel during the alumni game, you'll have a chance to join in
recognizing a Brandeis Baseball family member who made it to the
MLB and to help the current baseball team in its fundraising
efforts. The 2010 baseball squad is scheduled to travel to San
Antonio, TX, in February 2010 for some warm-weather practice time
and the first games of the 2010 baseball season. Everyone is
looking forward to this team-building experience and the chance to
prepare outdoors for the UAA conference tournament (which still
happens at the beginning of March in Florida). The celebration will
continue at the Wave Sports Pub at the Waverly Oaks Fitness Club
starting at 5 PM. You will be able to spend more time with old and
new friends, and meet with Nelson.
