John Evans will begin his sixth season as head cross country
coach and track and field in 2009-10. A 1989 graduate of Providence
College, Evans was a three-time Big East and IC4A champion in
several events and an All-American in the 1,500-meter run. In the
past six years, he has helped Brandeis place six individual
athletes at the NCAA cross country championships. In 2008, he
guided the men's cross country squad to its first team berth at the
NCAA championships in 10 years. Evans also helped coach six
University Athletic Association (UAA) Rookies of the Year - Mekonen
Gendebo '11 in 2007 and Marc Boutin '12 in 2008 for cross country
and Ryan Parker ‘06 in 2003, Linda Kropp ‘07 in 2004,
Geff Fauchet ‘08 in 2005 and Anat Benun ‘09 in 2006 for
track and field. Prior to coming to Brandeis, Evans coached at
Providence, and with the Boston Running Club, Nike Boston and Team
New Balance. Ten of his athletes have competed in the World
Championships the Olympic Games and other international
competition, including his wife Sinead, who represented Ireland in
1996 and 2000.
