Bloom earns UAA Golfer of the Week honors
WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University had three
student-athletes selected as University Athletic Association (UAA)
Athlete of the Week this week. Sophomore Lee Bloom of West
Hartford, Conn., was selected for golf; rookie left fielder Tony
Deshler of Pepperell, Mass., earned baseball honors; and senior
pitcher/designated player Kaitlin Streilein of Point Pleasant,
N.J., was recognized for softball for the second time this
Bloom was recognized by the UAA for the first time in his career. He established a new school record at MIT's Jack Barry Invitational by shooting a two-under-par 70. He tied for medalist honors before losing in a playoff. The Judges as a team shot a school-record 307 to finish in third place. Bloom also was Brandeis's top golfer at two other tournaments, firing an 80 at Worcester State College's Sterling Invitational and a 77 at the Johnson & Wales University Invitational.
Deshler, who was selected UAA Rookie of the Year earlier in the season, helped the Judges to a 4-3 week by batting .429 (12-for-28) with 11 runs batted in, seven runs scored, and seven extra-base hits (three home runs, two doubles, two triples) for a .964 slugging percentage. Deshler recorded four multi-hit games, including a 3-for-6 performance (two homers, double) with four RBI in a 20-6 win over the University of Massachusetts-Boston, and a 3-for-5 effort with five RBI (including a three-run homer) the following day in an 8-4 triumph over Roger Williams University. For the season, Deshler is hitting .331 with a team-leading 47 hits, 31 RBI and three triples. The Judges are 17-16 headed into their final two regular-season contests.
Streilein batted .634 (26-for-41) with 15 runs batted in and 12 runs scored, registered a .927 slugging percentage on eight extra-base hits (five doubles, two triples, and a home run), and struck out 32 batters in 29.1 innings in the circle for a 4-0 record and a 1.43 earned run average in leading the Judges to an 11-1 week. Streilein hit safely in all 12 contests (driving in runs in nine of them) with nine multi-hit games. Her best effort at the plate came in the opening game of a doubleheader sweep of Salem State College, where she hit 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a triple, and four RBI in a 7-1 victory. Brandeis has won a school-record tying 33 games this season (33-8-1), which includes a school-record 23 straight victories.
Bloom is a 2006 graduate of Loomis Chaffee School. He is the son of Ronald and Cheryl Bloom, West Hartford, Conn.
Deshler is a 2007 graduate of Lawrence Academy. He is the son of Albert and Suzanne Deshler, Pepperell, Mass.
Streilein is a 2004 graduate of Brick Township Memorial High School. She is the daughter of Richard and Susan Streilein, Point Pleasant, N.J.
