PLYMOUTH, Mass. - The Brandeis University golf team competed in the 2009 Babson Golf Spring Opener this past weekend. The field consisted of 13 other golf teams and 70 total players in a two-round tournament. Brandeis finished the tournament in 13th place out of 14 teams.
On the first day of the tournament, the Judges were in 13th place and shot a 348. They were led by seniors Ralph Harary (Cotuit, Mass/Barnstable) and Aaron Hattenbach (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica) who both shot 86. After day one they found themselves 33 strokes behind Nichols College.
On the second day, Brandeis sophomore Charles Sacks (Phoenix, Ariz./Jess Schwartz) improved 16 strokes from his first day by shooting a 77 (+5). His 77 tied him for the fifth-best score of the day and helped Brandeis punch a score of 329. Harary also improved on his 86 by shooting an 84 while rookie Aaron Cusato (San Diego, Calif./Point Loma) also produced a solid improvement with an 87 on day one and then a second round 82.
Cusato finished the tournament with a team-best 169 (+25) which tied him for 36th place. Harary and Sacks finished tied for 38th place with a 170 (+26) while Hattenbach's 172 (+28) placed him tied for 43rd. Brandeis finished the tournament with a total of 677 strokes and a 13th place finish.
As they improved on day two so did the other teams. Nichols College finished in second place (625) while Salem State took the victory by shooting an impressive 303 on day two, to win by four strokes (621).
Brandeis will compete in three more spring invitational tournaments before competing in the UAA Championships on April 25, at Royal Lakes Golf Course in Flowery Branch, Ga.
