Golfers show improvement, place 22nd at NEIGAs

BREWSTER,Mass. -- The Brandeis University golf team shaved 32 strokes off their score and improved by seven places on the second day of the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) championships, finishing in 22nd place among 44 teams and seventh among Division III squads.

All four scoring golfers broke 80 for the Judges, who posted a second-round score of 309, their best single-day score at the NEIGA meet under head coach Bill Shipman. The round was the fourth-lowest among Division III teams on the day and tied for 11th among all teams on Day Two.

Rookie Aaron Cusato (San Diego, Calif.) was the Judges' top finisher, coming in a five-way tie for 25th place with a score of 80-75-155 (+11) on the par-72 Captain's Course. He was seventh among Division III golfers, posting Brandeis's best individual score and finish at the NEIGA's under Shipman. Cusato was followed by sophomore Charles Sacks (Phoenix, Ariz.), who improved by six strokes to shoot 85-79-164 (+20) and tie for 95th place. Senior Alex Podell (Los Angeles, Calif.) was the third Brandeis golfer to crack the top 100, shaving nine strokes off his first-day score, coming in tied for 100th with a score of 87-78-165 (+21). Junior Lee Bloom (West Hartford, Conn.) showed the best improvement of the tournament for the Judges, cutting 11 strokes off his score to fire an 89-77-166 (+22), tied for 110th. Senior Ralph Harary (Cotuit, Mass.) was Brandeis's final competitor, shooting 90-85-175 (+31) to come in 168th.

Podell and Harary also won two of the tournament's three skill challenges. Podell captured the long-drive competition, launching a blast 363 yards. Harary was the second-straight Brandeis player to win the putting contest on the tournament's nine-hole putting course.
