Deluca named preseason All-American by d3hoops.com
WALTHAM, Mass. - Brandeis University grad student Steve DeLuca of Merrimack, N.H., of the men's basketball team has been selected as a preseason first-team All-America forward by d3hoops.com.
DeLuca was a second-team preseason All-America selection by d3hoops.com as a senior in 2007, but played just 27 minutes in 2007-08 because of injury. DeLuca was granted a medical hardship season as he works towards his M.S. in management at Brandeis's Rabb School of Continuing Studies. DeLuca enters 2008-09 ranked 17th on Brandeis's career scoring list with 1,178 career points. He was a first-team All-University Athletic Association (UAA) selection as a junior, when he led the Judges in scoring (15.4 ppg), rebounding (6.1 rpg), steals (35), blocks (14), 3-pointers (46) and 3-point percentage (45.1%). DeLuca led the Judges in scoring 14 times and rebounding 13 times in '07-'08 as Brandeis made its first NCAA Division III tournament appearance in 29 years and went 20-7.
Last year, with DeLuca out of the line-up, Brandeis won a school-record 23 games and reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament. Coach Brian Meehan's squad was ranked No. 9 in the nation, tops among New England schools, in the d3hoops.com preseason poll. Brandeis opens its 2008-09 campaign on Nov. 18 at Lasell College at 7 p.m. The game is a rematch of a first-round NCAA tournament match-up played at Brandeis that the Judges won, 80-59.
DeLuca is a 2004 graduate of Merrimack High School. He is the son of Lydia and John DeLuca, Merrimack, N.H.
