Capano, Hughes named UAA Athletes of the Week

WALTHAM, Mass. - Brandeis University junior Lucia Capano of Manchester, N.H., and sophomore Tyrone Hughes of Dorchester, Mass., have been selected as University Athletic Association (UAA) Athletes of the Week for the week ending Jan. 17. Capano was recognized for women's track and field, while Hughes was honored for men's basketball.

Capano was selected as the UAA Track and Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this season after leading the Judges to victory at home at the 2010 Reggie Poyau Memorial Invitational on Jan. 16. She won three individual events and ran the lead leg on a second-place relay. Capano qualified for her first career NCAA championship in the triple jump, which she won with a leap of 11.27 meters (36 feet, 11 ¾ inches), a provisional mark that won the event by 0.39 meters, or more than one foot, three inches. She is now ranked sixth in the nation in Division III.

Capano added victories in the long jump (5.30 meters or 17 feet, 4 ¾ inches) and the 55-meter dash (7.60 seconds), while also running the lead leg of the 1,600-meter relay that finished second with a time of 4:19.00.

Hughes, a sophomore guard, was recognized by the UAA for the first time in his career for his terrific week as the 15th-ranked Judges went 3-0. Hughes was second on the team in scoring in all three games, averaging 15 points per game. He also averaged a team-high four assists and three steals per game while grabbing 3 rebounds per game. Hughes also topped the squad with 56% shooting from the field (14-25), 57.1% from beyond the arc (4-7) and was third at 86.7% from the line (13-15).

Hughes opened the week with career-highs of 16 points, seven assists and four steals in an 81-57 non-conference win over Bates College on Jan. 12. In a 58-55 overtime win at then-third-ranked Washington University on Jan. 15, he had 13 points, including four of the team's nine points in the extra session. He also had five rebounds, two steals and an assist while hounding Bear All-American guard Sean Wallis into a season-high eight turnovers and kept him scoreless over the final 33 minutes. Finally, he played all 40 minutes against the University Chicago in a 75-69 win on Jan. 17, matching his career-best with 16 points and adding four assists and three steals as the Judges completed a road sweep of the Bears and Maroons for the first time ever. Overall this season, Hughes averages 9.4 points, 2.8 assists and team-best 2.3 steals per game for the 11-2 Judges.

Capano is a 2007 graduate of Manchester Central High School. She is the daughter of Peter and Susan Capano, Manchester, N.H.

Hughes is a 2007 graduate of East Boston High School who spent a post-graduate year at the Taft School in Connecticut. He is the son of Percy and Marilyn Hughes, Dorchester, Mass.
