Moton named UAA Athlete of the Week

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University senior guard Gabriel Moton of St. Petersburg, Fla., has been selected as the University Athletic Association Men's Basketball Player of the Week for November 25.

Playing in the team's second, third and fourth games of the season, Moton continued what has been a sizzling start to the campaign for both him and the Judges. After recording 12 points, 12 rebounds and five assists in just 17 minutes played during a 111-59 victory over Curry College two weeks ago, Moton averaged 21 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals in three contests last week.

The senior poured in a career-high 32 points during a 96-90 victory at UMass Dartmouth last Tuesday. Moton singlehandedly kept the Judges in the game during the first half, scoring 20 points in the final 7:22 of the frame to turn a 14-point deficit into a 6-point lead. In addition to shooting 10-for-14 from the field and 11-for-14 at the line, Moton finished with five rebounds and a team-high four assists.

Moton led the charge last Thursday against Framingham State, scoring 13 points in on 5-of-7 shooting in the first half alone. Brandeis comfortably defeated the Rams, 104-66, and Moton played just seven minutes after the break.

Moton stuffed the stat sheet against Rhode Island College on Saturday, a last-second, 73-72, loss for the Judges. The transfer from Boston College finished with 16 points and team-highs of 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals.

The Judges are off to a 3-1 start this season under head coach Brian Meehan. Brandeis established a school record in scoring over its first three games, pouring in 111, 96 and 104 points. It is the first time since 1994-95 that the team has had two 100-point games in a season. It is also the most points the Judges have scored in a three-game span since 1992-93, and a school record for points in the first three games of the season. Brandeis 95.8 points per game through four contests is the 11th-best mark in the country.

Moton is a 2010 graduate of St. Petersburg High School. He led the Green Devils to a FHSAA Class 6A championship game as a senior, earning All-Pinellas County first-team and St. Petersburg Times All-Suncoast second-team honors. He played in 63 games over his first two years at Boston College, including three starts before transferring to Brandeis last season.
