WALTHAM, Mass.- The Brandeis Men's and Women's fencing teams struggled during the Brandeis Invitational going a combined 0-9 (0-4 for the men and 0-5 for the women). They faced tough competition from Brown (Men 11-16, Women 7-20), North Carolina (M 10-17, W 8-19), St. John's (M 7-20, W 1-26), Yale (M 10-17, W 11-16) and Cornell (W 7-20). Still, there were some good individual performances.

The Men's saber squad were the top performers beating Brown 5-4 and North Carolina 6-3. Top individual performers on the men's side began with rookie saberist Jess Ochs-Willard (Montclair, N.J./ Montclair) who went 7-2 on the day. Another rookie saberist, Adam Mandel (White Plains, N.Y./ The Masters School), also had a good day going 6-4. Sophomore foil Julian Cardillo (Medford, Mass./ St. Johns Prep) had a strong performance winning 8 of his 12 bouts and senior epee Alex Powell (Upper Montclair, N.J./ Montclair) won four of the epee squad's nine bouts for the day.
Junior saberist Zoe Messinger (Short Hills, N.J./ Millburn) won seven of the 14 points Brandeis saberists won on the day, including the only point scored by Brandeis against St. John's. Junior Vikki Nunley (Glen Gardner, N.J./ Voorhees) had an impressive performance, winning 8 of her 12 bouts with the foil. Senior Emily Mandel (White Plains, N.Y./ The Masters School) was the top performer for the epee bouts winning three of Brandeis's nine on the day.
The men's team returns to action with the women's team on January 28th for the second Northeast Conference Meet at Boston College against Brown, Sacred Heart, Dartmouth, Vassar, and the hosts.
