NORTON, MA (taken from a Wheaton College press release) -
Wheaton College rookie Dan Lane (Dedham, MA) scored a pair of
second-half goals as the Lyons knocked off Brandeis University, 2-0
in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Keefe
Field. Lane, the defending Player of the Week for both the ECAC and
NEWMAC, now leads the team with six goals and 14 points. Wheaton
moved to 4-3 overall while the Judges, ranked 10th in New England,
fell to 4-2 on the season.
The Lyons produced numerous scoring chances in the opening 15
minutes. Rookie Mathurin Coulibaly (Ivory Coast, Africa) took three
shots in close, one of which was blocked on a diving stop by senior
keeper Pat Makridakis (Mendon, MA), while Lane ripped a shot wide
left off a giveaway.
In the 22nd minute, Brandeis sophomore Evan Duval (Wilbraham, MA)
slid a shot ast Wheaton junior keeper Matt Pachniuk (Newtown, CT),
but sophomore back Jim Ferriero (Medway, MA) made a stop at the
goal line. The teams stood scoreless at intermission.
For the fifth time in the last six games, Lane played a role in the
Lyons'
first goal. At 64:47, he blasted home a free kick from 20 yards for
what stood up as his third game-winning tally of the season. Less
than 10 minutes later, he completed his first multi-goal game for
the Blue and White by rifling a left-footed shot from inside the
box past a diving Makridakis into the right side of the net.
Sophomore Reed Hollett (Bedford, Nova Scotia) assisted after a
serve from the left sideline.
Pachniuk finished with a season-high seven saves for his fourth
shutout this year. Makridakis turned aside three shots in the loss.
