WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Brandeis University men's soccer team closed out its non-conference schedule tonight with a 5-1 road victory over Clark University. The Judges, ranked No. 18 in Division III by D3soccer.com and #23 by the United Soccer Coaches, improve to 11-3 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 7-5-3.
Brandeis rookie Noah Gans (Newton, Mass./Newton South) opened the scoring in the 26th minute on an assist from senior Josh Ocel (North Attleboro, Mass./Worcester Academy). The goal was Gans's second of the season and his career.
The assist was Ocel's team-leading seventh of the season and the 41st of his career, three shy of tying the school record. The point also moved Ocel into a tie with brother Sam '12 for 13th on Brandeis's career scoring list with 75 points.
Josh Ocel would surpass his brother in the 32nd minute when he converted a penalty kick for his 18th career goal.
In the 40th minute, Gans finished off a nifty give-and-go from junior Andrew Allen (Norfolk, Mass./King Phillip Regional) for his second goal of the game. Allen added a second assist just 2:03 later on a score by senior Bernardo Ponte (Cambridge, Mass. / Cambridge Rindge and Latin). The Judges finished their scoring in the 56th minute as sophomore Max Breiter (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) converted a feed from classmate Alex Walter (Londonderry, N.H./Lawrence Academy).
Clark spoiled the shutout bid just six seconds after Breiter's goal, as Evan Jurkowski fed Sean Munroe to get the hosts on the board.
Brandeis outshot Clark, 22-7, for the game, including 12-1 in the second half. Sophomore Greg Irwin (Passaic, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) earned his second win with two saves in 65 minutes of work. Clark's Connor Maguire had nine stops for the Cougars.
The Judges conclude their season with a three-game homestand that kicks off next Friday evening, Oct. 27, against Washington University at 5 p.m.
