Men's swimming takes dual meet at Wheaton
WHEATON, Mass. - Behind 11 first place finishes overall, three coming from senior James Liu (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) and three more by junior Aaron Bennett (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville), the Brandeis men's swimming and diving team took first place in the dual meet on Saturday. Strong contributions from several other swimmers aided in the wins over WPI, 154-130, and Wheaton College, 173-109.
Liu led the attack, anchoring the 200-yard medley relay team, consisting of senior Justin Wellins (Canyon County, Calif./Canyon), sophomore Marc Eder (Princeton, NJ/Lawrenceville), and freshman Daniel Danon (Istanbul, Turkey), to a victory (1:40.69). Liu took individual wins in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.98), the 50-yard freestyle (22.05), and the 100-yard freestyle (48.24). Bennett put together a similar performance, first capturing a victory in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:43.46), edging out teammate senior Alex Cemaj (Omaha, Neb./Westside) who placed second. Bennett then went on to take the 200-yard butterfly (1:58.65) as well as the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.53), before contributing to the men's second place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay behind WPI, consisting of sophomore Josh Allgaier (Ambler, PA/Hatboro-Horsham), Wellins, and senior captain Jesse Hershman (Hamden, Conn./Hamden).
Danon and Eder provided solid support, contributing a total of 98 points for their two first place finishes. Eder led the way with first place finishes in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:03.09), the 200-yard breaststroke (2:22.80), as well as a second place finish behind Danon in the 200-yard IM (2:08.23). Danon's victory in the 200-yard IM (2:05.89) capped off a three win effort for the rookie. He went on to capture the 100-yard butterfly (53.25) before taking second behind WPI in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.52).
