Swimmers split with Clark in senior day meet

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Brandeis swimming and diving teams held their senior night at Clark University on Jan. 20 as they took on the Cougars, coached by Paul Phillips, Class of 1995. The men emerged victorious by a 139-100 margin, while the women fell, 122-100.

The Brandeis men improved to 5-1 on the campaign in dual meets by winning nine of the 13 events. Senior James Liu (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) set the standard for the class of 2010 with wins in the 50-yard freestyle (22.69 seconds) and the 100 free (49.72 seconds), while classmate Jesse Hershman (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) added a win in the 500 free (5:15.55) and was runner-up in the 200 butterfly (2:15.14). Also contributing from the senior class were Justin Wellins (Canyon County, Calif./Canyon), who took home second in the 100 free (51.05 seconds) and third in the 200 (1:54.75), and Alex Cemaj (Omaha, Neb./Westside), who was runner-up in the 1000 free (10:46.86), fourth in one-meter diving (161.50 points) and fifth in the 200 backstroke (2:20.15).

Underclassmen who won events for the Judges included Aaron Bennett (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville), who captured the 1000 free (10:40.29) and the 200 fly (2:01.71); rookie Daniel Danon (Istanbul, Turkey) in the 200 individual medley (2:05.84); and sophomore Marc Eder (Princeton, N.J./Lawrenceville) in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.04). Brandeis also won both relays, with the quartet of Danon, Eder, Bennett and Hershman taking the 400 medley relay to open the meet in 3:44.53, while the foursome of Wellins, sophomore Josh Allgaier (Ambler, Pa./Hatbor-Horsham), rookie Niko Karkantis (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) and Liu won the 400 free relay in 3:27.79 to close things out.

On the women's side, Brandeis captured six of the 13 events but fell to 2-4 overall. Seniors Siobhan Lyons (Leominster, Mass./Notre Dame Acad.) and Hollis Viray (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) led the way for the class of 2010. Viray won the 500-yard freestyle with a season-best 5:24.10, while taking second place in the 200 free (2:04.46) and the 200 IM (2:23.48). Lyons won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:20.14 and placed third in the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:43.42. Seniors Dasha Hentoff (Natick, Mass./New Jewish High School) and Lisa Rice (Quincy, Mass./No. Quincy) also contributed points for the Judges. Hentoff was fourth in the 200 free (2:13.05), the 200 fly (2:36.02) and the 200 breaststroke (2:49.08), while Rice took fourth in the 50 free (28.90 seconds), the 500 free (5:54.09) and the 1000 free (11:58.91)

Also touching first for the Judges in two events was sophomore Angela Chui (Toms River, N.J./Peddie School), who captured the 200 IM (2:16.22) and the 200 back (2:11.57). Sophomore Elise Allan (Swedesboro, N.J./Kingsway Reg.) also earned a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:37.68. The team of Chui, rookie Holly Spicer (Northampton, Mass./Northampton), Lyons and Allan opened the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay with a mark of 4:20.34.
