Liu, Chui shine for swimming and diving at MIT Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Senior James Liu (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) led the Brandeis men's swimming and diving team to a fourth-place finish out of seven teams at the 2009 MIT Invitational this weekend.

Liu contributed 80 points (61 individual and 19 relay) out of the Judges' 397. His top performances came in the freestyle events, placing fifth in the 100 (48.23 seconds) and 200 (1:46.82). Liu also placed sixth in the 200 IM (2:01.15), 10th in the 50 free (22.20 seconds) and 200 butterfly (53.32 seconds) 11th in the 200 butterfly (2:07.10) and swam the anchor leg on a pair of sixth-place relays, the 400 medley (48.48 second split) and 400 freestyle (49.02 split).

Junior Aaron Bennett (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) had the Judges' top two individual performances. He placed second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:57.50, just over one second behind the winner from MIT. He also placed third overall in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:56.95, eight seconds out of the top spot, and 12th in the 100 fly in 54.00 seconds.

Sophomore Marc Eder (Princeton, N.J./Lawrenceville) had several top-10s as well, coming in third in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.47) sixth in the 400 IM (4:23.51) and 100 breaststroke (1:00.99), ninth in the 200 IM (2:01.77) and 200 backstroke (2:04.82).

Rookie Daniel Danon (Istanbul, Turkey) also contributed points with a seventh-place finish in the 200 buttefly (2:03.79), ninth in the 100 butterfly (52.91 seconds) and 10th in the 200 back (2:05.36).

On the women's side, the Judges finished in seventh place overall out of seven teams. Sophomore Angela Chui (Toms River, N.J./Peddie School) led the way for the Judges. Chui scored 92.5 points (74 in individual races and 18.5 in relays) of the team's 308 points. Chui had runner-up finishes in the 400-yard individual medley (4:42.98), the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.32) and the 200 back (2:13.32) while coming in third in the 200 IM (2:12.12) and 10th in the 200 butterfly (2:20.50). The team's best relay performance was seventh in the 400 free relay with Chui swimming 56.56 seconds on the lead leg.

Brandeis's next leading scorer was senior Hollis Viray (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury). Viray's best finish came in the 200-yard breaststroke, placing third in 2:33.16. In the 400-yard individual medley, she touched fifth with a time of 4:53.90, and also took fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.26. Viray also placed seventh in the 200 IM (2:17.01), 11th in the 500 freestyle (5:24.36).

Junior Dana Simms (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) contributed points with a seventh-place finish in the one-meter diving event with a score of 188.90 and ninth in the three-meters with 174.95 points.

Rookie Holly Spicer (Northampton, MA/Northampton) had a pair of seventh-place finishes in the breaststroke events, finishing in 1:11.57 in the 100  and 2:35.24 in the 200. Senior Siobhan Lyons (Leominster, Mass./Notre Dame Acad.) placed ninth in the 200 fly (2:19.82)  added a point in 16th place in the 100 fly (1:03.67).
