WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University rookie Brian Granoff of Miami/Fla was named the UAA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 10.
Brandeis split on the week, falling to No. 10 Middlebury College by an 8-1 score, but rebounding for a 6-3 win against Colby College. Granoff won three of his four matches, sweeping Colby in both singles and doubles, and helping to snatch the Judges' only point against the Panthers in doubles. He leads the team in overall wins this season with a 4-2 record in dual meets.
Against the Mules, Granoff and junior Michael Secular of Bronx, N.Y., combined to give the Judges a 2-1 lead in doubles, winning 8-5 at No. 3. Granoff provided the squad's sixth and final point at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).
Secular and Granoff had an impressive win against Middlebury, defeating the Panthers' Courtney Mountfield and Jackson Frons, 8-2, on their home court. Mountfield is ranked nationally in both singles and doubles.
Granoff had Brandeis's closest singles match against Middlebury as well, taking the hosts' Brantner Jones to a tiebreaker in the second after a close first set as well, but falling 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). Jones is ranked 31st in Division III in singles and No. 1 in doubles.
The Brandeis men are now 4-2 on the season under head coach Ben Lamanna. They return to action on Saturday, at University Athletic Association-rival NYU.
Granoff is a 2013 graduate of Gulliver Prep. He is the son of Jeff and Susan Granoff, Miami, Fla.
