WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Babson College softball team (24-8)
received two outstanding pitching performances in a non-conference
sweep of host Brandeis University (13-19) on Monday afternoon. The
Beavers, ranked fourth in New England, topped the Judges by scores
of 4-0 and 8-0.
Sophomore Jess Byrn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) enjoyed a huge day for Babson, hitting home runs in each game while throwing the sixth no-hitter in program history in game two. She pitched five hitless innings, allowing just one baserunner on an error, while striking out three to improve to 6-1 on the year.
Junior Stacy Schlicht (Hillsborough, Calif.) fired a shutout to earn the win in game one, with Byrn and senior co-captain Erica Barry (Malden, Mass.) providing most of the offense. Byrn hit the first home run of her career with two outs in the third, and Barry later added a two-run shot - her second of the year - in the sixth.
Gaskell gave Babson an early spark in game two, as she hit a two-out, two-run home run to give the Beavers an early 2-0 advantage. Byrn then made it 4-0 with her second long ball of the day in the second, and she drove in her third run of the game to kick off Babson's three-run fifth. Junior Andrea Cartullo (Holbrook, Mass.) added a two-run double in that inning, as the Beavers cruised to the 8-0 win.
Brandeis was paced by senior SS Mari Levine (Hopkinton, Mass.), who went 2-3 in game one and was the only Judge to reach base in game two when she got on in the fifth inning on a Babson error. Senior 1B Bri Smith (Tewksbury, Mass.) reached base in all three plate appearances in game one, going 2-2 and getting hit by a pitch.
