ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The Emory University softball team,
ranked No. 11 in the nation, scored five runs - four unearned - in
the third inning today to defeat the Brandeis University Judges,
7-1, in a University Athletic Association contest.
Emory (15-3, 3-0 UAA) opened the scoring in the top of the first
with a two-out RBI single by RF Alyson Moler. Brandeis (2-3, 1-2
UAA) responded with a perfectly executed double steal by senior 1B
Bri Smith (Tewksbury, Mass.) as classmate LF Elissa Glucksman
(Stamford, Conn.) crossed the plate. The Eagles battled back on top
in the second with an unearned run on a pair of throwing
errors.
In the fifth, one run scored on another error before Emory SS
Lauren Haag had a two-run double to open the lead to 5-1. The
Eagles strung together three straight two-out hits to add another
run, but the Judges and sophomore hurler Kaitlin Streilein (Point
Pleasant, N.J.) were able to keep the EU bat silent after that,
giving up just three more hits the rest of the way.
Offensively, Streilein was Brandeis's only multiple hitter on the
contest, going 2-3 with a double. Junior LF Marissa Rubin (Teaneck,
N.J.) added a double for the team's only other extra base hit.
