Softball falls to No. 7 WashU in UAA opener, 19-1
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The Brandeis softball team opened its
University Athletic Association schedule today with a 19-1 loss at
the hands of the No. 7 team in the nation, Washington (Mo.)
University. The contest was played at the Seminole County Complex
in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
Brandeis (1-2) mustered just three hits against WashU, scoring
their only run in the bottom of the fifth inning before the contest
was called because of the 8-run rule. After senior 3B Mari Levine
(Hopkinton, Mass.) reached on an error to start the inning, a
double by sophomore RF Natalie Volpe (Southington, Conn.) put
runners on second and third. After a line-out double play
threatened to strand Levine at third, sophomore DP Danielle Mayer
(Larkspur, Calif.) reached on an error as Levine crossed the plate.
Sophomore Kaitlin Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.) suffered the
loss in the circle to fall to 1-1 on the season.
WashU (5-0) got at least one hit from eight of their nine starters,
with six gooing for multiple hits. The Bears went for extra-bases
on six of their 20 hits, including two home runs. The only inning
in which they didn't score was the second.
