ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The Brandeis softball team suffered
its first loss of the season, 11-1, at the hands of eighth-ranked
Emory University in a University Athletic Association contest held
in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
The Judges (3-1, 1-1 UAA) were held to just two hits by Emory (9-1,
1-0 UAA) senior Kathy Gordon (Midland, Ga.). Senior 1B Kaitlin
Streilein (Point Pleasant, N.J.) singled in the second inning,
while rookie Erin Thorn (Perkasie, Pa.) drove in the team's only
run in the fifth inning. After classmate Danielle Lavallee (Sutton,
Mass.) coaxed a walk to lead off the frame, sophomore Lauren
Rashford (Whitesboro, N.Y.), fresh off her stint with the women's
basketball team, entered as a pinch runner. After senior OF Natalie
Volpe (Southington, Conn.) walked, Thorn singled up the middle to
avoid the shutout.
The Eagles scored nine runs in the first inning off Brandeis
sophomore Emily Vaillette (Milford, N.H.). Emory sent 13 players to
the plate in the first, reaching on eight hits, two walks and an
error. They added two more runs on four hits in the third.
