Softball sweeps season opener over NEC, 18-1 & 9-0
TITUSVILLE, Fla. -- The Brandeis University softball team opened
its 2008 season in fine fashion today as he Judges swept a
doubleheader from New England College, 18-1 and 9-0, at the Cocoa
Expo in Florida.
Brandeis allowed just two NEC hits in 10 innings, as both games
were halted by the eight-run rule. Senior Kaitlin Streilein (Point
Pleasant, N.J.) went the distance in the game one, giving up one
hit and striking out seven, while fellow senior co-captain Natalie
Volpe (Southington, Conn.) went one better, fanning eight in five
frames with one hit allowed.
Offensively, the start of the day was rookie 2B Melissa Cagar
(Ridgewood, N.J.). In her collegiate debut, Cagar went 7-9 with
three runs scored and seven RBI. She was 4-5 with three runs and
three RBI in the opener and 3-4 with 4 RBI in game two. Sophomore
catcher Erin Ross (Manalapan, N.J.) had a terrific performance in
game one as well, going 3-3 with two doubles and a home run.
The Judges open University Athletic Association play on Tuesday
against Case Western Reserve University and Emory University at
Altamonte Springs, Fla.
