WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University junior Marianne Specker of South Windsor, Conn., has been named as a Capital One First-Team Academic All-American in softball, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA).
Specker, who was chosen as a designated player, carries a 3.92 grade-point average as a psychology major. On the field, she was a versatile player for the Judges in 2011, starting 24 games at designated player and 12 other games at four different positions. Specker earned second-team All-University Athletic Association honors after leading the team in hitting with a .368 batting average, with 42 hits in 114 at bats, and tying for second on the squad with 21 RBI. She helped Brandeis finish with a 20-18-1 record and a co-runner-up finish in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England championship.
As a sophomore, Specker was an All-New England selection as a utility player when she hit .416 with 35 RBI and 36 runs scored, helping the team to a 29-9-1 record and its first-ever NCAA tournament berth.
In the classroom, Specker is a two-time Academic All-UAA selection and six-time Dean's list student. The recipient of a Brandeis Friends and Alumni Scholarship, Specker is also the vice president of Brandeis's chapter of Psi Chi, the international honor society for psychology.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
Specker is a 2008 graduate of the Westminster School. She is the daughter of Ken and Carol Specker, Windsor, Conn.
