No. 4 Brandeis women blast Wheaton (Mass.), 83-39

Junior forward Caitlin Malcolm (Windsor Locks, Conn.) had a double-double in the first 15 minutes of action tonight as the Brandeis University women's basketball team, ranked No. 4 in the nation in the most recent poll, routed the visiting Wheaton (Mass.) College Lyons, 83-39.

Brandeis (4-0), ranked in the top five for the second time in school history, opened the game with eight unanswered points from Malcolm and were never really challenged after that. The junior pulled down an offensive rebound with 4:41 left in the first half to reach her second consecutive double-double and the 12th of her career. The Judges led by 14 at the half, 33-19, and outscored Wheaton, 50-20, in the second to record the 44-point final margin to hand the Lyons (3-1) their first loss of the season.

Malcolm scored 17 points on four-of-six from the floor and nine-of-11 from the line. She finished with 16 rebounds to match her career-best performance, with six caroms coming on the offensive glass. Four other Brandeis players scored in double figures, with rookie forward Lauren Orlando (Peabody, Mass.) tallying a career-best 15 off the bench. Sophomore guard Jaime Capra (Old Bridge, N.J.) added 14 points and seven rebounds, tied for second-most in the contest, while sophomore guard Courtney Tremblay (Peabody, Mass.) had 10, including a pair of 3-pointers in three attempts. The Judges recorded 19 assists on 24 field goals and outscored Wheaton from the line, 29-3, at one point owning a 23-0 advantage from the charity stripe. Brandeis also owned a 50-30 rebounding advantage.

Wheaton placed one player in double figures, sophomore forward Becky Aitchison (Norwalk, Conn.), who had 14 points on seven-of-14 from the floor. Rookie forward Krystin Hickey (Manchester, N.H.) led the Lyons with seven rebounds (four offensive) and four assists, as Wheaton had assists on 15 of their 17 field goals.

Brandeis next faces Babson College on Sunday, while Wheaton travels to Fitchburg State on Thursday.
