No. 7 WashU hands women's soccer first UAA loss

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (taken from a WashU press release) -- The Brandeis University women's soccer team suffered its first University Athletic Association (UAA) loss of the 2006 season tonight, falling, 3-0, at Washington University. The Bears were ranked No. 7 in the nation by the NSCAA and No. 13 by d3kicks.com.

With the loss, the Judges fall to 8-4-3, 1-1-3 in the UAA, while WashU improves to 14-2 and remains unbeaten in conference play at 5-0. The Bears need a tie or a win against New York University on Sunday to clinch the UAA title.

Despite playing into the wind in the first half, Washington controlled play the entire half, outshooting Brandeis 7-2. WU tallied the first goal of the game at the 9:09 mark after junior Marin McCarthy (Deephaven, Minn.) scored off of a corner kick from freshman Libby Held (Potomac, Md.) for her first goal of the year.

WashU senior MeghanMarie Fowler-Finn (Fort Wayne, Ind.) blasted home a 30-yard unassisted goal in the 57th minute to make it 2-0. Adding to the lead, Fowler-Finn drilled a 30-yard free kick off the post that ricocheted into the net in the 82nd minute. The goal was Fowler-Finn's ninth of the season and 37th of her career.

Brandeis netminder Betsey Medow (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) made two saves in the losing effort.
