ATLANTA, Ga. -- The fifth-ranked Emory University Eagles scored the only goal they would need just 35 seconds into the contest tonight as they defeated the visiting Brandeis University Judges, 3-0, in a University Athletic Association (UAA) match. Brandeis falls to 6-9-2 on the season, 0-4-1 in the UAA while the Eagles remain unbeaten at 13-0-2, 4-0-1 in the Association.
Shortly after the opening kick, Emory established the lead. The Eagles' Claire Mullins was the beneficary of nice passing from teammates Merrill Bachouras and Caroline Coates. Mullins' score in the game's first minute was her fifth of the season. EU carried the lead into the intermission, but broke it open with two goals in the second half. Coates assisted Lidija Baraiskas in the 57th minute, while Bachouras's sister Lee had the helper on Mullins' second goal of the game.
Brandeis got 10 saves overall, four from each of their two netminders. Junior Francine Kofinas (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) allowed one goal in the first half, while rookie Michelle Savuto (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) gave up two in the second. The Judges also had a pair of saves as defenders cleared the ball off the line. Sophomore Mary Shimko (Bay Village, Ohio/Lake Ridge Acad.) led Brandeis with three shots overall, one on goal.
Brandeis is back in action Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Carnegie Mellon, while Emory plays host to NYU at the same time.
