Sweet 16 bound! Women blank Lasell, 3-0, to advance to second weekend of NCAA play
AMHERST, Mass. (courtesy Amherst College) - Six different players factored into the scoring to lead Brandeis University to a 3-0 victory over Lasell College in an NCAA Second Round game on Hitchcock Field.
With the win the Judges improved to 15-4-2 on the season and advance to face Cortland State in the sectional semifinals next Saturday at Ithaca College while the Lasers close out the season with a 15-5-1 mark.
Moving into the attacking third in the 13th minute, sophomore Dara Spital (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep)
headed down a cross at the top of the 18, playing an oncoming Sapir Edalati (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck South)
on the left side of the box. Beating Laser goalkeeper Ashley Parrelli '13 to the ball, Edalati, a sophomore, chipped a shot into the left corner past a sliding Lasell defender to put the Judges on the board. It was her seventh goal of the season.
Generating a scoring opportunity just over two minutes later, the Lasers' Bridget Lynch '15 served a cross to twin sister Kayla Lynch '15, but senior netminder Francine Kofinas (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West)
made the save on the ensuing header to preserve the lead.
Hoping to add to the tally in the 29th minute, Spital created space in the box before putting a low shot on net, but Parrelli made a diving stop to keep Lasell within one. With just over a minute left before the half, Mathilde Robinson (Palmetto Bay, Fla. / Miami Palmetto)
sent a cross from the right side across the face of the goal. Making a run toward the backpost, Melissa Darling (Weymouth, Mass. / Weymouth)
got a foot on the volley, but pushed the try wide left, narrowly missing a chance to double the Brandeis lead.
Staying aggressive to start the second, rookie Sara Isaacson (Medfield, Mass. / Medfield)
made a move down the right side before floating a cross to the opposite field. All alone on the left side of the box, junior Madeline Stein (Mount Kisco, N.Y. / Fox Lane)
settled the pass before slipping a low shot under the keeper to make it 2-0.
Earning a corner in the 60th minute, sophomore Alyssa Fenenbock (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional)
served a ball toward the far post, finding the head of rookie back Haley Schachter (West Barnstable, Mass. / West Barnstable)
, who headed the Judges' third marker into the right corner. It was Schachter's second goal of the tournament.
Brandeis finished with a 16-9 shot advantage, while Lasell held a 6-2 edge in corners. Kofinas made three saves in the win, while Parrelli made four stops in the loss.
