Judges miss finals in mile at NCAA Championships

LINCOLN, Neb. — Three Brandeis University women's track and field runners competed in the preliminaries of the mile run at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan University today, but none were able to make it into tomorrow's final.

The Judges were represented by sophomore Kelsey Whitaker (Kingston, Mass./Notre Dame Acad.), who was seeded fifth entering the meet; senior Amelia Lundkvist (South Portland, Maine/Cheverus), who was seeded ninth; and senior Victoria Sanford (LaGrangeville, N.Y./Arlington), who earned the 17th and final spot in the field.

With all three Brandeis runners competing in the first of two heats, the Judges looked to finish among the top three of the nine runners in the heat, or have one of the four fastest times that was not among the automatic qualifiers. The trio spent the first half-mile hanging back in the pack, waiting to make a move.  Lundkvist was the Judges' leader for that first mile, but Whitaker moved ahead of her just into the second half-mile.

On the sixth lap, Lundkvist made a charge, moving up into fourth place for a quarter-mile, but she was unable to hold off Brianne Mirecki of Williams or Grace Tilton of RPI down the stretch. Lundkvist finished the race in sixth place with a time of 4:59.78, two places and just about a quarter of a second out of the final qualifying spot. Whitaker finished eighth in the heat and 13th overall with a time of 5:02.20, while Sanford's time of 5:02.54 was ninth in the heat, but represented a personal best.

"It was a tough race," said Brandeis interim head coach Sinead Delahunty Evans. "Kelsey gave it her all, but wasn't quite there. Amelia had limited training time [because of injury], so she didn't have the change of pace she needed right now. I expect her to have a great outdoor season. Vicki was so happy with her p.r., as were we all."

The Brandeis outdoor track and field season is scheduled to start on March 29 at the Tufts Snowflake Invitational.
