Wingenbach earns second-team All-UAA honors; Blasco twins named honorable mention

WALTHAM, Mass. - Brandeis University volleyball senior outsidehitter Lorraine Wingenbach ofBuffalo, N.Y., has been named asa second-team All-University Athletic Association (UAA) selectionfor the second year in a row. Sophomore sistersAbby and Paige Blasco ofGreeley, Colo., werehonorable-mention All-UAA selections at setter and outside hitter,respectively.

Wingenbach finished second on the Judges andninth in the UAA in kills, averaging 2.77 kills per set. Inconference play, she finished third, averaging 3.18 kills per set.Wingenbach led the squad in total digs with 371 and trailed AbbyBlasco on the team with 3.25 digs per set. Wingenbach earnedtournament MVP honors at Brandeis's Judges Classic and becameBrandeis's all-time leader in kills this season, finishing hercareer with 1,857. She is also the Judges' all-time leader in killsper set (3.59), attack attempts (5,413) and games played (517),while ranking second in career digs (1,596), service aces (227) andmatches played (145).

Abby Blasco, the 2007 UAA Rookie of the Year,was an honorable-mention All-UAA for the second year in a row. Sheled Brandeis in assists, averaging 9.84 per set, fourth-most in theUAA. Her 3.31 digs per set led the team and ranked 10thin the conference. In Association play, Abby averaged 10.33 assistsper set to rank 3rd. She also led the squad with a .250hitting percentage.

Paige Blasco, who missed the 2007 campaign dueto injury, led Brandeis in kills, averaging 3.14 kills per set,third-most in the UAA. She also finished fourth on the squad with2.85 digs per set and second in total digs with 308. Her 3.03 killsper set in conference play were fourth in the circuit.  BothAbby and Paige earned UAA Athlete of the Week honors once duringthe 2008 season.

Brandeis finished the 2008 season with a 19-13 record under headcoach Michelle Kim, finishing fourth in the UAAfor the second season in a row. The Judges have only finishedhigher than fourth once before in UAA play, which began in 1986.

Wingenbach is a 2005 graduate of City HonorsSchool. She is the daughter of Christine Naples of Buffalo, N.Y.,and Philip Wingenbach.

Abby and Paige Blasco are a2007 graduates of Frontier Academy. They are the daughters of Leonand Ellie Blasco, Greeley, Colo.
