Women's cross country claims Keene State Invitational title
KEENE, N.H. – The Brandeis University women's cross country team earned its first invitational win since 2009 today as the Judges finished seven points ahead of the host team at the 2013 Keene State University Invitational. The Judges had 52 points to the Owls' 59 by putting their top three runners among the first four finishers, with three rookies among their five scoring runners and five freshmen among the top seven.
Leading the way for the second meet in a row was senior co-captain Amelia Lundkvist (So. Portland, Maine/Cheverus), who finished second overall out of 152 competitors, but first among Division III runners, just as she did last time out at UMass Dartmouth. Lundkvist covered the five-kilometer course in 18:46, only two seconds behind the winner from Division II St. Michael's. Rookie Maddie Dolins (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park), who finished fifth in her first multi-team meet, improved to third this time around, running a time of 18:54. Sophomore Kelsey Whitaker (Kingston, Mass./Notre Dame Acad.) improved her time from the UMD meet by 20 seconds this week to improve from 20th place to fourth overall .
Rookie Ashley Piccirillo-Horan (North Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) improved by eight spots over her first multi-squad meet to come in 15th today with a time of 19:46. Classmate Kate Farrell (Windham, N.H./Windham) contributed a scoring performance in her first collegiate meet, coming in 34th with a time of 20:28. Sophomore Maggie Hensel (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) came in 40th with a time of 20:46, while rookie Julia Schiantarelli (Newton, Mass./Newton North) was the final official runner for the team in 54th place with a time of 21:24.
Brandeis, which bested a field of 12 teams, had not won a multi-team meet since the 2009 Connecticut College Invitational. The Judges return to action next weekend at the Open New England Championships in Franklin Park.
