WATERFORD, Conn. -- The Brandeis University women's cross country team had four of the top 10 finishers today as the Judges placed third out of 21 teams at the Connecticut College Invitational, held at Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford, Conn.
For the third time in as many meets, senior Amelia Lundkvist (South Portland, Maine/Cheverus) led the way with a second-place finish in the field of 257 runners. Lundkvist covered the six-kilometer course with a time of 21:34, just five seconds out of first place. In each of her three runner-up placements this season, Lundkvist has been within five seconds of taking the top spot.
In their first 6K race of the season, rookie Maddie Dolins (Highland Park, Ill./Highland Park) and sophomore Kelsey Whitaker (Kingston, Mass./Notre Dame Acad.) were the team's second and third runners for the second week in a row. Dolins earned a top-five finish for the third time in a multi-team meet, placing fifth with a time of 22:03. Dolins was two seconds of fourth place and six behind the bronze medalist. Whitaker, who was fourth in Brandeis's previous meet, placed sixth this week with a time of 22:07. Rounding out the top-10 finishers for the Judges was senior Victoria Sanford (LaGrangeville, N.Y./Arlington), who came in 10th with a time of 22:20. Sanford placed 10 spots better than she had a week earlier.
The Judges' final runner whose score was included in the team score was sophomore Maggie Hensel (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna), who came in 96th overall, scoring 85 points. Hensel's time was 24:40. Rookies Julia Schiantarelli (Newton, Mass./Newton South) and Heather Murphy (Millstone, N.J./Allentown) were the team's sixth and seventh runners with times of 25:30 and 25:47 to finish 147th and 158th.
